CHS Healthcare Delivers Inclusive Changing Places Facilities Across Melbourne’s New Metro Tunnel Stations

The opening of the Metro Tunnel Melbourne marks a major step forward for the city’s transport network. The new nine-kilometre underground link connects five modern stations: Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac. Thousands of Victorians contributed to the project, including the team at CHS Healthcare, who supplied and installed the specialised equipment that supports the stations’ Changing Places facilities.

Raising the Standard for Accessibility in the Metro Tunnel

A key feature of the new Metro Tunnel stations is the inclusion of fully compliant Changing Places facilities. Each room is located within the unpaid concourse so they remain accessible to the public at all times, even before tapping onto a Melbourne train service.
CHS Healthcare supplied and installed all equipment required to meet national Changing Places standards. This included a height-adjustable change table, a certified ceiling hoist system for safe transfers and a durable privacy screen. All components were integrated carefully into the architectural layout to ensure a clear and practical space for users and carers.

With installations completed at all five stations, accessibility was built into the project from the beginning rather than added at the end.

Supporting Travellers With High Support Needs

For many people with high support needs, the availability of appropriate facilities determines whether public transport is a workable option. These rooms provide a clean, safe and spacious environment that supports essential care tasks while maintaining comfort and dignity for both the user and the carer.

The Metro Tunnel improves access to hospitals, universities, workplaces, entertainment precincts and other key destinations across Melbourne. The inclusion of Changing Places facilities ensures these benefits extend to travellers who rely on specialised support. The rooms offer generous space for wheelchairs, mobility aids and multiple carers, making it easier for people to move confidently throughout the network.

A Milestone for Accessibility in Public Transport

The Metro Tunnel represents a significant investment in modern transport infrastructure. The accessible facilities within each station are an important part of this upgrade and demonstrate how inclusive design can be delivered at scale. Through the addition of Changing Places in Metro Tunnel stations, Melbourne strengthens its commitment to truly inclusive transport experiences.

CHS Healthcare is proud to have equipped all five new stations with compliant Changing Places facilities. The project reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting safer, more inclusive public environments. It is hoped that the standard set here will continue to influence future infrastructure projects across Australia.
